This week we took a different route with renovation for this upcoming client, Gabby Garrison. Gabby is a great friend of mine who played D1 Softball at the University of Missouri and also had a passion for education, specifically being a teacher. After her collegiate career, she settled down back home and has been an assistant teacher for an elementary school. Gabby gave Cedes Secrets a call and asked if we would help her find a piece to bring her classroom together. She was looking for a piece that will exemplify her love for bringing in different types of kids with different passions and finding ways to help them learn and be educated. She has a big love for working with kids and she is one talented teacher. After careful consideration, it seemed that the best piece that would fit her devotion for students, teaching, and education would be Raphael’s The School of Athens.

Raphael’s School of Athens is known for the collaboration of the alphas of all subjects from math, philosophy, science and more. This piece shows the gathering of all of the greats like da Vinci, Aristotle, Phytagoras, and Archimedes to name a few. Here at Cedes Secrets we believe this piece helps put Gabby’s purpose as a teacher into a visual representation. Not only does the piece show these great influences from all different parts of Europe, it also shows that they all belong under the same roof.

Our client loved the piece we chose and she was very pleased with the location. We decided top place the piece in the back of her classroom, so not only is it one of the first things you see when you walk into Gabby’s classroom, but it can also be a reminder for Gabby as to what her purpose is and why she enjoys teaching.

Our next client is my younger brother who is looking for some action filled paintings to go in his new apartment. One thing about my brother, Warren or as I call him “Deuce” is that he is a very animated person. He has always had a love for action prone movies, tv series, and literature. When he came to me with this idea, I was thrilled to find more driven pieces like his personality to fit for his home. When I think of animated films or monumental pieces that show the same perseverance and determination that is bestowed in him I think of Renaissance artist: Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Bruegel is the master of capturing immense action in a still painting and when I referred this artist to Deuce, one of his selections was the Elder’s very own Hunters in the Snow.

This oil on wood piece is an eye-catching one because of the contrast of colors between the Austrian white snow and the darker rustic colors used for the hunters. Deuce’s first take on this piece as he stated was, “It makes me want to bring the painting to life. I could see this painting being put into a movie, maybe even a horror type of film”. This piece leaves a lot of questions for the audience to take in on what could happen next or what should happen next. Here at Cedes Secrets, due to his innovative remarks about this piece we felt that this painting could be placed in his living room. Deuce’s living room is also the common area where he and his friends spend most of their time watching movies and other cinemas that fit their interests. Fun fact about this piece is that it is derived from a short story from Tobias Wolff!

The next piece that was introduced by us to Deuce does also come from the Northern Renaissance painter and it does embody the same fluid action type feel that was inspired from our client. This piece, The Fall of the Rebel Angels is the one for the taking. In this piece, Deuce was captivated by the coupling of the battles that are occurring in the piece. He took notice of the versatility found in the angels wings, the colors, and the emotions depicted in the piece. This painting has a lot going on but speaks to the true meaning of fighting your demons even while falling from a great height. The intensity of this piece is high and it uses the unity of action and emotion at its greatest expense. At Cedes Secrets we felt that due to the simplified chaos presented in the piece and also the collective use of colors and contrast, this could be a piece that can be presented at the entrance of his apartment. This piece will captivate his guests to ask questions as to why he has this enticing piece at the “beginning” of his apartment. After discussing the final details with Deuce, he was pleased with our choosings and was excited to place his new purchases at his apartment.
